SEOUL, KOREA – Frostdale is the recipient of Korea’s 2010 Presidential Good Design Award for its nanogrid™ wireless switches, part of a comprehensive home automation and energy management solution.
“In the past, home control products have often focused solely on functionality until you reached the high end, custom solutions,” says Ms. Nami Kim, Frostdale’s head of design. “Our goal is to produce stylish, elegant, and affordable products that users can visualize in their homes.”
Inspiration for the switches’ design can be found in the curves of traditional Korean architecture and clothing. The switches are capable of delivering detailed energy usage and history data to users via web or smartphone applications. Temperature sensors and imaging equipment are available options for expanding the switches’ functionality.
The Good Design committee, sponsored by the Ministry of Knowledge, aims to recognize and reward creativity and innovation that enhances daily life through superior design. Eligibility is open to products that have been marketed for two years or less at the time of submission, or to those products scheduled for release during the year in which the award is given.
Among the criteria weighed are form, environmental friendliness, usability, and how well the product relates to consumer needs. Judging occurs in six stages whereby products are evaluated by a panel of government appointed judges from various fields; in total, the panel comprises nearly one hundred design experts from various fields.
In 2010, Seoul served as the World Design Capital, a title awarded to cities that have leveraged design toward social and economic progress. The WDC title, according to Seoul Mayor Oh, Se-hoon, marks Seoul’s commitment not only to improving lives through design, but to a new way of communicating with the world.
